Why do the contents of high-temperature retort spouted pouches not require preservatives?

Retort pouches are composite plastic bags capable of undergoing high-temperature sterilization treatment (121-125°C). Currently, they are primarily based on the high melting point of polypropylene (PP) heat-sealing materials and their safe and stable food packaging performance. Coupled with high barrier materials such as aluminum foil, high barrier transparent nylon (PA), and high barrier transparent polyester (PET), they achieve barrier performance close to that of metal packaging. Therefore, they are also known as 'soft cans.'

Spouted pouches combine all the material applications of retort pouches and  with the addition of high-density PP heat-resistant spouts, enable liquid packaging to undergo high-temperature sterilization.

By subjecting the contents to high temperatures of 121-125°C for 20-40 minutes in a pressurized cooker, 100% of bacteria, over 99.99% of fungi, as well as fungal spores, viruses, and their nucleic acids within the contents and packaging are effectively eliminated. In combination with high barrier materials (high barrier to oxygen and water vapor), a highly sealed container is formed, creating a stable sterile environment that enables the contents to have a shelf life of 12-24 months at room temperature (variations depending on sterilization conditions, storage conditions, and differences in barrier material performance).

Traditional rigid packaging often cannot meet the requirements of high-temperature sterilization and high barrier to oxygen, thus frequently necessitating the addition of antioxidants, stabilizers, and food additives (such as preservatives). However, high-temperature retort spouted pouches achieve true zero addition, ensuring the authenticity of the product and promoting a healthier and safer consumer concept."
